ALEJANDRO MEDRANO
Soul, Heart and Edge
Soul, Heart and Edge
Blades have always been part of my life. I grew up in a nature-loving family — people who spent their free time hiking, bivouacking, hunting, fishing… Since I was a kid, I watched my elders handle and care for their blades, knives, folders and axes. They always said the same thing: “A blade and knowing how to use it is all you need in the wild.”
I was 13 when I bought my first pocketknife with my savings, with my parents’ permission and full of excitement. That excitement quickly vanished on the second day — poor design and manufacturing flaws made me realize something I had never thought about: not every blade can be trusted. That’s when another phrase from my elders came to mind: “If you want something done right, do it yourself.” That was the spark that ignited my calling. I started sketching my first designs and carving them in wood, until I was finally able to work with steel. I also discovered the power of the internet as a learning tool — I’ve spent countless hours in front of a screen absorbing all the knowledge I could find about knifemaking.
A few years later, I trained as a Machining Technician and Industrial Designer. I went through vocational training to acquire the skills I needed to become a knifemaker. Today, I keep learning from the best, and I’ve completed courses with masters like Kyle Royer, Neels Van Den Berg, and Jason Knight.
Knives and folders are tools with a mission: to serve their user faithfully. They must be ergonomic, perfectly finished, without edges that can harm, and with every material assembled seamlessly as one. The steel must suit its purpose; the blade design should seek the most effective and efficient cut, while maintaining a pleasing and inspiring aesthetic.
Each piece that leaves my workshop is one of a kind, with its own design and manufacturing process — whether forged or stock removed.
Depending on the project, I use carbon steels, stainless steels, powder metallurgy steels and Damascus.
For handles, I incorporate all kinds of premium materials like exotic woods, carbon fiber, resins, and exclusive elements like ivory, titanium or precious metals.
The sheaths are crafted using traditional leather or modern Kydex, depending on the client’s taste and needs. Why is Cuchillos Medrano right for you?
If you share my passion for blades, I don’t need to explain much. As a craftsman, my goal is to create flawless pieces that, when used responsibly and properly, never disappoint. Knives and tools that fulfill their purpose and endure — pieces that can be passed down from generation to generation. These are 21st-century blades that carry the soul of traditional knifemaking.“Soul, heart and edge.”
Every one of my creations is born with a unique purpose. No two are alike. They come from the blend of my craftsmanship and the will of my clients — that’s why I say they have a soul.
My pieces speak for me. They reflect the kind of artisan I am and what I want to contribute to the world through my creativity — there’s no art without a heart.
And of course, the edge — the part of the blade that transforms whatever it touches into something new. A blade opens up infinite possibilities, and reminds us that every edge must be used with respect, without fear, and always with responsibility.
